Why Attend BWRC

When I attended the 2006 conference, I was in the process of writing my first novel, A Purple Butterfly, and shopping it to traditional publishers. At the conference, I received tons of invaluable information about self-publishing which demystified the process for me. When I returned home, I began investigating self-publishing services. I also began developing a plan to self-publish and market my novel. The information and materials I collected at the 2006 BWRC are resources I have turned to repeatedly in the past year to guide me on my journey of self-publishing. I thank BWRC for reminding me that we have stories to tell and that we are the best people to tell them.{Click title to read full article}

BWRC is appropriate for writers at any stage in their development. The conference addresses those who want to write, individuals who have written one book, as well as those with several books under their belt! The conference appeals to fiction and non-fiction writers. It is also informative for people who are seeking advice about book promoting, publication, and/or legalities involved. I thought this broad-brushed approach was a real drawing card which appealed to a variety of audiences. {Click title to read full article}

Such good things only happen at BWRC—because it is focused on Black writers AND it draws people of great accomplishment and quality. Publishing can be a cold business, but in BWRC I found a family that encouraged me and even hoped for my success. It was a place where I could begin to learn all that I didn’t know, all among new family and friends. {Click title to read full article}

I was so happy to be at BWRC and see so many authors in one place that I’ve admired over the years. I’ve since networked with several people from the conference and have met with them for other programs in other cities. BWRC is a wonderful way to network with published and aspiring authors. And it’s also a way to learn more about the writing craft as well as the publishing business. {Click title to read full article}

The workshops were invaluable. Every time I meet an author, I share information (i.e., array of conference topics, BWRC website address, etc.) about the BWRC and encourage him/her to make plans to attend. As an aspiring author or new author, you know there’s a lot about the writing and publishing process you don’t know, but that lack of knowledge is magnified when you attend an event like BWRC.

The ‘ah ha’ moment came during the plane ride home where I decided that I would at least start to practice the things I had learned from Anita Bunkley. She had given me some strong tips to go back with. I realized that my story was really a part 2 and that there was a part 1 missing. That was a hard pill to swallow.
