Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino

Have you ever felt like you have a gift for writing and wanted to write a book but didn’t know where to start? Have you written a book but don’t know how to go about getting it in print? National best-selling and award-winning author ReShonda Tate Billingsley will present a free one-hour crash course on writing and getting published at the 2009 Black Writers Reunion & Conference. Whether you’re just toying with story ideas or have a finished manuscript, this workshop on writing and publishing basics will give you an overview of how to write a book and get it published. In this workshop, you’ll learn:
• Getting from “Page 1″ to “The End”
• Basic elements of crafting a novel – story, plot, dialogue, setting
• Benefits of mainstream publishing versus self-publishing
• Why you should ALWAYS hire an editor
• Is your idea marketable?
• Getting your book in the right hands (agents, editors, and most importantly, readers)
• Why writing the book is the easy part
• Common mistakes beginning writers make
• Why you should never write to become rich (and why it most likely won’t happen that way)
And much, much more! Come armed with questions and plenty of paper…and get ready to leave well on your way to a published book!
This power-packed workshop, to be presented Thursday, June 18, 2009, 9:30 a.m. in Las Vegas at the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino, is being offered in conjunction with the fifth Black Writers Reunion & Conference, an event well known for its engaging workshop presenters, outstanding topics, inspirational ambience, and professional organization. While BWRC does not discriminate against participants of any race, BWRC is the only touring writers’ conference presented both by and for Black writers. Its mission is to educate, support, and motivate aspiring, emerging, and published writers, promoting and encouraging artistic expression and growth through skill development in the art, craft, and business of creative writing in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama as well as business and career endeavors in professional writing.
The 2009 BWRC offers more than 25 workshops on the craft of writing fiction and nonfiction, the art of spoken word poetry, playwriting, screenwriting, blogging, public speaking, technical writing, grant writing, website tips and tricks, writing careers, and starting your own greeting card business. The conference also covers the business side of publishing and self-publishing with sessions on book deals, pitching to agents and editors, writing book proposals, media and reader relations, editing essentials, e-publishing, literary law, self-publishing, and marketing, among others. Admission to this workshop is free and open to the public, but application is required. Space is limited, so apply early.
