Sophia Simmons
What is your most memorable BWRC moment?
I learned a lot at the Black Writers Reunion & Conference, and met some really wonderful people. But most of all I appreciated ReShonda Tate-Billingsly sharing about her obstacles and how she overcame them. She mentioned how she set goals for herself without ever doubting they would be achieved. That has inspired me to do the same.
Has the BWRC helped you to accomplish any writing goals?
When I left the conference, I was even more inspired to complete four more books over the next 3 years, and I am well on my way. I also learned some really practical steps/tools for achieving this while at the BWRC.
Tell us about your book and other achievements since joining the BWRC family.
My debut novel, LOVE AGAIN, is a drama about a woman in her mid-30’s coming out of a violent marriage and starting her life anew. It is book one in the Reality Love series. Book two, MY HEART SAYS YES, will be released very soon.
When I attended the BWRC I hadn’t planned on selling books there, however, I sold quite a few by word of mouth and even more when I returned home. The feedback I’ve gotten has been wonderful and even uplifting. I needed that because I was also in the midst of being criticized negatively by some other writers who considered themselves, I guess, more experienced than I. I can say that listening to the authors who spoke at the event has strengthened me to continue my belief in my own talent, even when in the midst of negativity.
Since attending the BWRC I have been featured in many online publications, such as Breathe Again Magazine, Fabulous Black Women, and Alive Magazine, just to name a few. I have also participated in several AM, FM, and internet radio shows. I have actively been touring my book and being booked for speaking engagements, either for book expos or regarding domestic violence. I have signed a contract to write a biography with a singer/songwriter/producer, and that has also opened many other doors for me. 2009 was quite a year. I am on a touring hiatus now so that I can finish my current projects, but I look forward to what 2010 and 2011 will bring.
What advice would you have for someone attending the conference?
I would suggest they listen attentively, learn all they can, and be ready to have a blast.
